Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally juice or sap, metaphorically, flavour), control human health and emotion. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery". Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. The prevailing types of theories attempting to account for the existence of humour include psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humour-induced behaviour to be very healthy; spiritual theories, which may, for instance, consider humour to be a "gift from God"; and theories which consider humour to be an unexplainable mystery, very much like a mystical experience. GNU Free Documentation License What effect do you think cartoons with adult humor have on kids? Q. Just curious about what impact some of these cartoons with adult and sexual humor have on kids. I think it's fairly obvious that they are geared on getting kids to watch them while attracting an adult audience as well. Is this all right in your opinion? Or is this exposing kids to adult themes too early. Asked by Kermit - Tue Sep 11 22:32:09 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. My daughter was just 5yrs old when my 28 year ld brother wanted her to watch the simpsons. She said "Mom, I watched it because my uncle told me to, but I didn't like it at all. Please tell me I don't have to watch it again" Some kids have more sense than adults. Answered by gerlawgoody1 - Wed Sep 12 02:07:08 2007 What kind of humor does a Cancer male tend to have? Q. I'm a Virgo and I have a bit of a perverted humor. I've been talking to this Cancer guy that I really like and he seems to like the low-key perverted jokes, but gets annoyed if they're very blunt. So how do I rebound if he finds my joke to not be funny, and what sense of humor do they generally have? Thank you! Asked by Bubbles - Wed Nov 26 16:20:15 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Cancerian communication can be a little on the strange side. They are the kings of indirect communication. You may notice he tells a lot of stories that are based on past experiences. Take Bill Cosby for instance. He is like the most famous Cancerian comedian I could think of. Yes his jokes are usually pretty clean and they are based on things that have happened to him in real life. Fat Albert and the Cosby kids were how he saw his friends when growing up. Cancerians like to dwell on the past. They will usually like to talk about funny things that have happened to them of friends or relative. From this you can understand that they are basically realist. though sometimes they can be known to have biting wits. Cancer is known to… [cont.] Answered by ejohnjr34 - Wed Nov 26 16:41:51 2008 What factors shape a persons sense of humor?
Q. Does heredity play a role and to what extent if any, can your sense of humor be changed by conscious effort? Asked by crosseyedlemon - Sun Sep 30 10:05:09 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Absolutely, my family and I have a certain sense of humor characterized by wit and word play. I expect it was from my family's above average intelligence. Certain families are just more literate than others and there are certainly more snobby families than mine who have their own sense of humor. Rememeber "Trading Places" with Eddie Murphy? Hopefully, not that bad.. but the rich and "sophisticated" have their own brand. I wouldn't know. But I suspect educated families laugh at jokes others would not. I know, I taught and many jokes went over the kids' heads cuz they didn't know WTH was going on? A joke about the TV show "Trading Rubble" instead of "Trading Spaces" did not work until I had to teach them what the word "rubble" meant... yeah,… [cont.] Answered by shallytally - Sun Sep 30 10:11:26 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Humor" Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres. Sourced
